Wilson's music convention on hold

The In The City music conference, set up by the late music impresario Tony Wilson in Manchester almost two decades ago, will not go ahead this year.
Yvette Livesey and Tony Wilson Yvette Livesey and Tony Wilson ran the event together until Wilson's death in 2007
The event was founded by the Factory Records supremo and partner Yvette Livesey as a music industry symposium and a platform for the best new bands.
Oasis and Coldplay are among the acts that got exposure there while unsigned.
Ms Livesey said she was taking a year off to get married and start a family, but pledged it would return in 2012.
From its inception in 1992, the event attracted the music industry to Manchester every autumn to chew over the future of the business by day and seek new talent in the city's bars and clubs by night.
Oasis, Radiohead and Suede played at the first In The City. Muse and Coldplay appeared in 1998, Snow Patrol performed in 2000 and The Arctic Monkeys put in an appearance in 2005.
Wilson, known for signing bands like Joy Division and the Happy Mondays and starting the Hacienda nightclub, was the event's figurehead.
But since his death in 2007, In The City has been challenged by rivals such as The Great Escape in Brighton and Liverpool Sound City.
Anniversary plans
It moved to a smaller venue last year and is believed to have had trouble securing funding for this year's event.
A statement said Ms Livesey's plan for a year off was "one of the key factors" in the decision.
She said: "I have been suffering from a serious, long-term illness for some years now and thankfully I am now fully recovered.
"I am also getting married and having a baby this year so I have made the decision to take a year-long sabbatical. Although there will not be an In The City this year, we are going to have the opportunity to plan an amazing event to celebrate our 20th anniversary in 2012."

Honorary knighthood for Barenboim

Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim has received an honorary knighthood for his work towards reconciliation in the Middle East through music.
Daniel Barenboim Barenboim accepted honorary Palestinian citizenship in 2008
The 68-year-old received the KBE - the highest honour for foreign citizens - from the British ambassador to Berlin at a gala dinner in the German capital.
Barenboim was praised for his tireless campaigning for peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
Last month, he led an orchestra in a "peace concert" in Gaza.
"Daniel Barenboim is a staunch advocate of the unifying power of music," British ambassador Simon McDonald said.
"He certainly has become an inspirational figure, not least of all for the next generation of musicians."
The conductor said he was "deeply touched" by the honour, adding that time he had spent in Britain had been "of formative importance until this very day".
Barenboim accepted honorary Palestinian citizenship in 2008 and co-founded an ensemble made up of young Arab and Israeli musicians, known as the West-Eastern Divan orchestra, in 1999.
In 2005, it performed in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Cameron receives explorer honour

Academy Award-winning director James Cameron has been named a National Geographic explorer-in-residence.
James Cameron James Cameron plans to travel to the depths of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean
The 56-year-old, who joins just 14 others who hold the honour, said it was "as amazing" as winning an Oscar.
The National Geographic list includes some of the world's most successful explorers and scientists.
In his role, Cameron plans to pilot a one-man submarine 11,000m (36,000ft) below sea level, to a part of the Pacific Ocean rarely seen.
The director told AFP that, as a teenager, he could think of "nothing better than to be an ocean explorer".
He made the Oscar-winning film Titanic because it gave him the opportunity to "dive the wreck" of the ocean liner, he added.
Cameron is helping to build a mini-submarine that will descend into the darkest reaches of the sea next June to the depths of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean.
"Our goal is to be on the bottom in less than an hour so that we can spend six or seven hours on the bottom doing science, taking images, taking core samples, discovering new species," he said.
Marine ecologist Enric Sala was also named a new explorer-in-residence.

Columbo star Peter Falk dies aged 83

Peter Falk, the American actor most famous for his role as scruffy TV detective Columbo, has died aged 83.
Peter Falk as Columbo, file pic from MCA TV Peter Falk won four Emmys for his cigar-chomping role as scruffy-haired, mac-wearing Columbo
The actor died peacefully at home in Beverly Hills on Thursday night, his family said in a statement.
He had been suffering from dementia for a number of years.
Peter Falk won four Emmys for his cigar-chomping role as the deceptively bumbling Columbo, and was nominated for Oscars in 1960 and 1961 for Murder Inc and Pocketful of Miracles.
In the 1987 cult classic The Princess Bride, he played a kindly old man regaling his sick grandson with a fairytale combination of swordplay, giants, a beautiful princess and fearsome rodents of unusual size.
But for most fans, even his best-supporting actor nominations were eclipsed by his incarnation as the sleuth in the shabby mac with no known first name and the killer catch-phrase: "One more thing..."
'Like a flood victim'
Columbo first appeared on American TV screens in 1968, and NBC commissioned a series in which the detective appeared every third week from 1971 until it was cancelled in 1977.
The part of its policeman hero had originally been written for Bing Crosby, but Falk made the part his own and continued to make special episodes well into his 70s.
He reportedly turned down an offer to convert it into a weekly series, citing the heavy workload.
The actor bought Columbo's trademark raincoat himself, only for it to be replaced after it became too tattered through its near constant use in the series.
He told one interviewer his shabby detective looked "like a flood victim".
"You feel sorry for him. He appears to be seeing nothing, but he's seeing everything. Underneath his dishevellment, a good mind is at work."
Peter Michael Falk was born in 1927 in New York City, where his parents ran a clothes shop.
He had an eye removed at the age of three due to cancer. He said he learned to live with the ailment after it became "the joke of the neighbourhood".
"If the umpire ruled me out on a bad call, I'd take the fake eye out and hand it to him," Falk told the Associated Press in a 1963 interview.
As an aspiring actor, he was reportedly warned by one agent the false eye would preclude him from working in television. In fact, it became another endearing trait of his most famous character.
Peter Falk had been under 24-hour care for several years.
The actor is survived by his wife of three decades, Shera, and daughters from a previous marriage Catherine and Jackie.
In 2009, Catherine Falk applied to be put in charge of his estate, saying he was suffering from Alzheimer's and that she had been blocked from seeing him for six months.

What makes the Stradivarius violin so special?

A well-preserved Stradivarius violin has just been sold in an online auction for a record £9.8m.
But what is it about the violins made by Italian craftsman Stradivari that makes the instruments so valuable?
Over the years, various theories have been touted in a bid to find out why a Stradivarius produces such brilliant sound quality.
Antonio Stradivari is considered to be the most distinguished craftsman of the instrument.
Born in 1644, he established his workshop in Cremona, Italy, and remained there until his death in 1737.
He made over 1,000 violins, violas and violoncellos, and was commissioned by King James II of England and King Charles III of Spain.
It is believed that around 650 of these instruments have survived.
His best violins and instruments were made during what is considered his golden period from 1700-1725.
Nicola Bendetti Violin virtuoso Nicola Bendetti plays a Stradivarius
His most famous violins include the 1715 Lipinski and the 1716 Messiah.
But there is still considerable debate about why the violins made by Stradivari sound superior to modern-day instruments.
In 2003, scientists from Columbia and Tennessee universities in the US claimed reduced solar activity in the 17th Century may be the reason for the Stradivarius sound.
They said the colder winters and cooler summers at the time produced slower tree growth which in turn led to denser wood with superior acoustical properties - circumstances not repeated since.
In 2006, other US researchers said they believed a Stradivarius owed its distinct sound to a chemical treatment designed to kill woodworm and fungi.
And it was once argued that Stradivari and others used wood from ancient churches, or that they added a mysterious ingredient to the wood, or used techniques that have since been lost.
Some have focused on the type of varnish used on the instruments.
But many of today's violin-makers have been unimpressed by such theories, putting the quality down to pure genius on Stradivari's part.
Paul Barritt Paul Barritt uses a 1695 Stradivarius which is on loan to the Halle Orchestra
The Cambridge Companion to the Violin states that the structure of a Stradivarius is key, noting the flatter shape and the shape of the plates (the panels that make up the front and back of the violin).
Ariane Todes, editor of The Strad magazine, concurs.
"They don't all sound fantastic but a good one that's been set up properly - the thickening of the wooden plate, the movement of the sound post and bass bar - sounds fantastic," she says.
Dr Jon Whiteley, a curator at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, which houses the famous Messiah Stradivarius agrees the quality "depends heavily on the shape of the instrument."
He explains that Stradivari's challenge was to produce both expressive sound and the volume needed for large concert halls.
Prior to the period when Stradivari was honing his craft, violin performances were usually confined to small venues such as private parties and were often used in quartets for chamber music, which did not require a huge sound.
"Stradivari came through, he proved a match for the new music being made," says Dr Whiteley.
"All his life he was searching for the ideal shape."
According to Dr Whiteley, Stradivari experimented with various forms, including a longer model.
Ms Todes agrees that Stradivari's instruments were "exquisitely crafted, the pinnacle of sound engineering".
She says the quality of a Stradivarius is "down to someone who was always trying to do better, he was always getting feedback from players, there was constant self-criticism".
However, Dr Whiteley points out that the shape of the soundbox is not as important as the talent of the violinist.
"A great violinist like Yehudi Menuhin could make a great sound from an old box and a piece of wire."
So how does a musician who plays a Strad feel about it?
Paul Barritt is the permanent guest leader with the Halle Orchestra based in Manchester.
'Work of art'
He uses a Stradivarius which has been on loan to the Halle for the last seven or eight years.
Barritt is keen to point out that there are "other wonderful makes like the Guarneri".
But he says the Strad is so special because of the clarity of tone.
"In a big concert hall, I know the tone will carry. It's not just how loud it is, it's the clarity.
"Each Strad is a character of its own, each has a very strong personality that makes them something to deal with, rather like an old house that is very interesting but doesn't always do exactly what you want," he explains.
"You have to go with the character of the instrument and then you will get great rewards."
He also remarks on Stradivari's impressive skill.
"Stradivari was a great workman. The cutting of the inlay is incredible and the beauty is extraordinary," he says.
Todes says there is another major reason why we should cherish the Stradivarius.
"If you compare it to an old Italian painting, the Strad is an incredible historical artefact that needs to be preserved. It's a work of art."

Summer in Chicago

With temperatures well below freezing, whipping winds and snowstorms that paint the city white, Chicago hibernates in the winter. But as soon as the snow melts and the city heats up, Chi-Town throws a three-month party. The Bleacher Bums get wild when the Cubs season starts, sunbathers and volleyball players revel in the 26 miles of open and free lakefront, and music and food lovers let loose during free festivals that last until the cold air returns.

The best of the fests
From 24 June to 3 July, the 10-day Taste of Chicago transforms Grant Park into a culinary and musical smorgasbord, with hundreds of dishes on offer from 59 restaurants and about 2.5 million visitors each year. Foodies willing to brave the sometimes maddening crowds and sweltering heat are rewarded with sparkling views of Lake Michigan and tastes of delicious Chicago classics like cheesy deep-dish pizza from Lou Malnati’s and authentic Polish sausages from the Bobak Sausage company. More exotic fare like oxtail and jollof rice from African restaurant Iyanze and chana masala from vegetarian Indian restaurant Arya Bhavan make the Taste a truly international event.
Twelve stands will enjoy their first year at the festival — including Lao Sze Chuan, which will serve up its signature dry chilli chicken, and Starfruit Café, which will have a variety of tasty frozen kefir, Pace yourself (and your wallet), because while entry to the festival is free, food prices vary. Take advantage of the small “taste of” portions each vendor is required to offer for about $2.
After properly gorging, the masses head to two Grant Park stages to dance off the calories at free concerts from national bands like the Lemonheads (28 June) and the Jayhawks (2 July).
Despite financial constraints, former long-time mayor Richard M Daley demanded Chicago’s major summer concerts remain free. But because of budget cuts, the previously autonomous Celtic Fest (29 June), Gospel Music Festival (26 June), Latin Music Festival (24 June) and Country Music Festival (1 July) will join the Taste this year. In previous years, some of the music festivals would have lasted more than one day, but with the combined format, artists like country star Loretta Lynn and fiddler Natalie MacMaster will contribute to the Taste’s soundtrack.
While some of the city’s music festivals have shrunk, the Hyde Park Jazz Festival (24 to 25 September) will double in size this year, thanks to significant grants from several foundations. Growing in size from 5,000 attendees in 2007 to 30,000 attendees in 2009, this year’s event will host a second day for improvising trumpeters and soulful singers in spectacular venues like Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House and the Hyde Park Union Church.
The cost-free music continues throughout the summer, but the future of Chicago’s free festivals remains unclear. Newly elected mayor Rahm Emanuel has yet to comment on whether he intends to privatize the concerts — a plan Daley considered before leaving office — which could bring dramatic changes to the summer festival line-up. So in the mean time, enjoy the many concerts at Millennium Park, including the Grant Park Music Festival (15 June to 20 August) and the 33-year-old Chicago Jazz Festival (1 to 4 September).
Outside of the city’s parks, art enthusiasts in the market for botanic-themed photos, paintings or ceramics head to the Botanic Garden Art Festival (1 to 3 July, free admission), which returns for the first time in nearly a decade. Original works from 80 artists are on view throughout the lush landscapes of the 385-acre Chicago Botanic Garden.
Dave Matthews Band will return to Chicago for the first time since recording the album Live At Wrigley Field in 2010, and this time the band is bringing dozens of friends along to throw itself a 20th anniversary party on Lake Michigan’s shore. From 8 to 10 July, Chicago will be the second of four cities to host the inaugural Dave Matthews Caravan (3-day pass/$195, single day/$85). Artists including the Flaming Lips, Kid Cudi and Michael Franti and Spearhead will rock out at Lakeside, a 600-acre former steel mill, now being used as a concert venue for the first time.
In its second year, the North Coast Music Festival (2 to 4 September) is still finding its groove, but reviews of 2010’s inaugural show were mostly positive. The new kid in town highlights several genres of music largely ignored by some of the other major festivals, and at $95 for a three-day pass, is the least expensive of the bunch. Bassnectar, Thievery Corporation and Common are just a few of the acts performing.

War Horse, which opened at the National Theatre and then moved to the West End and Broadway, also earned Tom Morris and Marianne Elliott a directing award.
Quoting poetry when getting his award, Rylance said "walking through walls" was "a totally earth-related craft".
Satirical musical The Book of Mormon was the big winner with nine honours.
War Horse, based on a 1982 novel by Michael Morpungo, tells the moving tale of a horse caught up in the carnage of World War I.
When collecting the award for best play, co-director Morris told the Beacon Theatre audience: "We quite like it when people cry."

The play, which has been made into a film by Steven Spielberg, also won design awards for sound lighting and scenery.
Rylance, 51, who won for his role as Johnny "Rooster" Byron in fellow British export Jerusalem, by Jez Butterworth, was a best actor winner for the second time.
When he won in 2008 for a revival of Boeing-Boeing, which also transferred from the West End, he also quoted little-known Minnesota poet Jenkins.
On Sunday, he told a bemused audience: "Unlike flying or astral projection, walking through walls is a totally earth-related craft, but a lot more interesting than pot-making or driftwood lamps."
The night's biggest winner, The Book of Mormon, from the creators of TV show South Park, follows the adventures of two Mormon missionaries sent to Uganda.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone thanked South Park fans, saying they "wouldn't be here" without them.
Parker jokingly thanked their "co-writer" Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon religion.
"You did it Joseph, you got the Tony," he said.

UFC 131

Two of the heavyweight division’s heaviest hitters, Junior dos Santos and Shane Carwinhave 23 finishes in 24 victories between them. Something has to give, with a potential title shot on the line.

Dos Santos tipped the scales at 239 pounds for his showdown with Carwin (254) in theUFC 131 headliner on Saturday at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The eight others slated for main card duty -- including co-headliners Kenny Florian (146) and Diego Nunes (145) -- also met their contracted weight requirements at Friday’s official weigh-in.

Dos Santos (Pictured, File Photo) will carry a seven-fight winning streak into the match. The 26-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt last appeared at UFC 117 in August, when he battered former International Fight League heavyweight champion Roy Nelson en route to a lopsided unanimous decision at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif. A polished and technical boxer, Dos Santos has secured eight of his 12 professional victories by knockout or technical knockout. His list of victims includes the world-ranked Fabricio Werdum, 2006 Pride Fighting Championships open weight grand prix winner Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic and 6-foot-11 Dutchman Stefan Struve. Dos Santos holds a perfect 6-0 mark inside the Octagon.

Anchored at the Grudge Training Center in Wheat Ridge, Colo., Carwin has not competed since UFC 116 in July, when he succumbed to a second-round arm-triangle choke fromBrock Lesnar at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The 36-year-old was a three-time national finalist in collegiate wrestling and a two-time All-American in football. Wins over former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir and onetime heavyweight title contender Gabriel Gonzaga anchor Carwin’s resume, which includes 22-, 29-, 31-, 44-, 49- and 69-second finishes. Only one -- his loss to Lesnar -- of his 13 professional bouts has reached the second round. Carwin owns a 4-1 record in the UFC.

UFC 131 -- which airs live on pay-per-view at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT -- also features a heavyweight duel pairing grappling ace Jon Olav Einemo (261) with Dave Herman (233), a middleweight match pitting former title contender Demian Maia (186) against Mark Munoz(186) and a lightweight battle matching Donald Cerrone (155) with Vagner Rocha (155). An hour prior, Spike TV will carry a pair of preliminary fights, as unbeaten middleweight prospect Chris Weidman (186) meets Jesse Bongfeldt (185) and the well-traveled Yves Edwards (155) challenges Canadian kickboxer Sam Stout (155).

Meanwhile, the five remaining preliminary bouts will be streamed on the UFC’s Facebook page and on YouTube: Dustin Poirier (146) vs. Jason Young (145), Nick Ring (185) vs.James Head (186), Darren Elkins (145) vs. Michihiro Omigawa (145), Krzysztof Soszynski(205) vs. Mike Massenzio (201) and Aaron Rosa (261) vs. Joey Beltran (247).

Writer Kay Mellor pens cuts drama

Writer Kay Mellor is tackling the fall-out from government cuts and the recession in a new drama for BBC One.
Kay Mellor
Five-part series The Syndicate, about a group of Lottery winners, was inspired by a friend who was losing her job.
"It's looking at where we're at today, in light of this coalition government and the current cuts," said Mellor, who wrote Band of Gold and Fat Friends.
"A friend rang up and said: 'Well I haven't won the Lottery this week', and it just came like that."
Mellor said the series would not be political "with a big P", but that it would tell the story of people, like her friend, who were at the mercy of the economic downturn.
"She's a woman of a certain age, she's going: 'Will I get work?'. There's a million and one things going on in her life - she's got mortgages and things to pay and is worried about her life, obviously.
"She lives her life from one worry to the next," Mellor said.
The writer is known for sharp works of social realism, such as Band of Gold, about a group of prostitutes in Bradford in the 1990s, and Fat Friends, about a slimming club.
The Syndicate will follow six workers at a cut-price supermarket in Leeds.
"There are a lot of people who don't know where their next penny's coming from, and more and more you hear people going: 'Well, I haven't won the Lottery this week'," Mellor said.
"I was thinking, what if somebody does? Let's have a look at money. Let's see what happens.
"I've taken my research seriously, so I've met up with a few Lottery winners and talked to them."
Filming will begin in September for transmission next year.

Ballet star Carlos Acosta admits O2 Arena challenges

Ballet star Carlos Acosta has admitted there will be challenges staging Romeo and Juliet at the O2.
Acosta bellieves the huge London arena is "not ideal", saying: "You lose the intimacy that Romeo and Juliet needs, you have to rely on cameras."
But the Cuban dancer, who plays Romeo, said it was something The Royal Ballet "needs to do".
"There is a new audience that we need to educate as to what ballet is, how wonderful it is," said the dancer.
"The company is looking good, casting is strong and the excitement is going to be there," Acosta told BBC Arts editor Will Gompertz.
The 38-year-old will perform in front of a nightly audience of up to 12,000 people at the arena.
In spite of "all the things that work against us in that particular venue, they will be able to appreciate what ballet is - colourful, special... and want to follow it more. That is what it is all about," he added.
It is hoped staging the production at the O2 will attract people who may not have thought about a night at the ballet before.
For its 2009/10 ballet season, just 22% of audiences at the Royal Opera House were under 36 years of age, while just over half lived within 10 miles of the central London venue.
Tamara Rojo and Carlos Acosta
Tamara Rojo stars opposite Carlos Acosta in Romeo and Juliet
"This is an attempt to attract new audiences, to educate the audience of the future," said Acosta, who grew up breakdancing on the streets of Havana.
"Hopefully there is a much younger crowd that [will] come to the O2, a diversified crowd.
"It is not about segregation... dance is for everybody."
In Cuba, he added, "they treat it [ballet] like you imagine the final of the World Cup... it's massive, it's on TV, it's everywhere and it's not a bit elitist."
Romeo and Juliet will be the first time the ballet company has performed in a UK arena.
Announcing the production last year, company director Dame Monica Mason said she was "thrilled" about the production being shown in such a huge venue as it would "introduce our work to so many new people".
Also featuring Tamara Rojo, Alina Cojocaru and Johan Kobborg dancing the principal roles, the ballet will run from 17-19 June.

Iran's lady footballers: Let them play

Football is the great global game: the closest thing we have to a connective cultural tissue that binds our species across national and cultural borders. But only in a world so upside down could "the Beautiful Game" be run by an organisation as corrupt as FIFA and by a man as rotten to the core as FIFA President Sepp Blatter. Only Sepp Blatter, whose reputation for degeneracy approaches legend, would hire a war criminal like Henry Kissinger to head "a committee of wise persons" aimed at "rooting out corruption" in his organisation. And only these two twinning avatars of amorality would use "the Beautiful Game" as an instrument of Islamaphobia.

On Sunday, moments before Iran's women's team was due to take to the pitch and play in an Olympic qualifier against Jordan, the team was disqualified for wearing their traditional full-body tracksuits and hijabs. Jordan was granted a 3-0-forfeit victory, crushing the lauded Iranian team's chances to go to the 2012 London Games.

As the Iranian players and officials tearfully objected, they were told that they had violated FIFA rules stating that: "Players and officials shall not display political, religious, commercial or personal messages or slogans in any language or form on their playing or team kits." The team was also informed that since 2007 FIFA has
held the view that wearing a hijab while playing "could cause choking injuries".

There are two problems with this argument. The first is that it's asinine. "Hijab soccer choking deaths," doesn't exactly send the Google search engine a-humming. But far more problematic is that the team had already received assurances from FIFA that the uniforms were in compliance. They had even played preliminary rounds without a blip from Blatter.

Iranian women's soccer director Farideh Shojaei told Reuters TV in an interview, "We made the required corrections and played a match afterwards. We played the next round and were not prevented from doing
so, and they didn't find anything wrong. That meant that there are no obstacles in our path, and that we could participate in the Olympics...This [uniform] is neither religious, nor political, nor will it lead to harm a player...and Mr Sepp Blatter accepted this."

So what is really going on here? First of all, we should dismiss any of FIFA's concerns about the welfare of the women involved. Blatter is an unreconstructed sexist and without resistance, women's soccer would look something like the Lingerie Football League. The man who bans the hijab proposed in 2004 that women players wear "hot pants" on the pitch to boost the sport's popularity. He said that the "tighter shorts" would produce "a more female aesthetic".

In addition, for years, human rights organisations have asked Blatter to take a stand and say something about the horrific influx of sex-slave trafficking that accompanies the arrival of the World Cup. Blatter's cold response, "Prostitution and trafficking of women does not fall within the sphere of responsibility of an international sports federation but in that of the authorities and the lawmakers of any given country." In other words, he's not exactlySusan Faludi.

Conversely, by denying the team the opportunity to show their genius in full Muslim dress, Blatter becomes an agent of their oppression. As Alyssa Rosenberg wrote for Think Progress, "[I]f we're really concerned with how women are perceived and treated in Muslim communities, it seems hugely counterproductive to adopt policies that force women to choose between abiding by the tenets of their faith and participating in activities that let them demonstrate their physical prowess and strategic intelligence."

I would add that Blatter's decision only feeds the profound Western ignorance regarding the position of Iranian women since the 1979 Islamic revolution. The literacy rate for women before 1979 was 35 per cent. Now it's over 75 per cent. In the days of the Shah, only one third of women were enrolled in institutions of higher education. Now that number is 50 per cent. One out of three Iranian doctors are female. In the United States, that number is one out of five.

The new presence of
Henry Kissinger, pardon the expression, unveils what this kabuki-theater is all about. Kissinger hasn't been shy about his views on Iran, openly calling for war and saying, "We must work for regime change from the outside." Given the way women's rights has been used as a red herring to justify war on the Muslim world, this is about perpetuating the stereotype of the Muslim damsel in distress denying those very women a powerful and visible presence on an international stage. This is about isolating Iran to continue the drum-beat of war. But most of all, at bottom, this is about Kissinger - and Blatter - using sports for their own political ends.

Those who bleat that "sports and politics" should be kept separate when an athlete dares express an opinion, should turn their outrage toward Blatter, Kissinger, and FIFA's decision to see soccer as a tool to sideline Muslim women. We should call upon FIFA to revoke the forfeits and adhere to the three words that should bind all leagues, all countries, and all people who believe that sports can reflect the
best of our species: Let them play.
